SINGAPORE WATERPOLO SQUAD GRAB FIRST SEA GAMES GOLD
By: WSL MSC Sdn. Bhd. (Malaysia) - ICT Committee
True to form, Singapore grabbed the first gold of the 25th SEA Games here in Vientiane when they beat Thailand 8-5 in the final round robin match this afternoon at the Aquatic Centre at the National Sports Complex. The gold was Singapores 23rd since 1965. Captain Luo Nan said after the game that the team struggled at the start and did not play as well as they should have.
The first quarter was a real challenge in terms of getting things going where we only managed to score twice. We dropped off a little in the second quarter for Thailand to level the score, said Luon Nan.
But we recovered after that and got into the rhythm to slot the remaining goals for the win. Of course, we are happy to defend the title in an event which we have been dominant all these years. I hope that the new generation will continue from here. With Singapore winning the gold, the silver went to the Philippines who beat Indonesia 18-3 in the other match as the latter settled for the bronze.

Philippines team captain Almax Laurel said afterwards that winning the silver was not a bad achievement considering that the team has seven new players in the squad. It has been a good experience for the players to play at the SEA Games and I hope that we will continue to grow as a team, added Almax.
But I hope that in the future, more South East Asian countries are encouraged to play the sport and help foster the growth of the game. At the very least, it will make water polo more competitive than it is now.
